NIGHTJAR SURVEYS

The arrival of warm summer nights and beautiful sunsets in Montana also brings along two expertly camouflaged and bat-like fliers: Common Poorwills and Common Nighthawks. These two aerial insectivores dwell in grasslands and other open spaces during their breeding season, and with the help of the Tracy Aviary, Montana Audubon is collaborating with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is looking for your help in tracking these cryptic birds!

Both Common Nighthawks and Common Poorwills are listed as a Species of Greatest Inventory Need in Montana, and Poorwills are also a Potential Species of Concern. Nighthawks are also declining across their ranges nationally. These surveys target Common Nighthawks, using a passive listening protocol, but you may observe some Common Poorwills near some shrubby grasslands or roadways! Collecting data on these species would allow for scientists and conservationists to more accurately assess the conservation status and needs of Poorwills and Nighthawks, which would not be possible without citizen scientists like you!

This survey will take place between June 1 and August 10.

Please fill out the form below if you are interested in participating.
